Starbound Mission Control

Reading support that takes time to understand your child

Attention to both the skills your child is developing and their experience of learning.

You want your child to make progress with reading. You also want someone to notice when they are losing confidence, understand what makes them hesitate and find a way to help them take the next step.

At Starbound, we pay attention to both the skills your child is developing and their experience of learning.

Dyslexic and autistic readers are welcome here. We take time to understand each child’s strengths, reading needs and what helps them participate comfortably and confidently. We listen to families and use those insights to guide our support.

Our founders, Nathalie and Ronel, both facilitate our programmes. Together, they bring educational expertise and a deep background in understanding behaviour and supporting development into everyday lessons. That combination shapes how we explain, encourage, respond to mistakes and work with families.

We look closely at what helps

When a child gets stuck, we explore what they need. Is there a sound–letter connection that needs more practice? Is the word unfamiliar? Would a clear demonstration help? Do they need a little more time to think before answering?

Support might include smaller teaching steps, additional repetition, visual prompts, a predictable lesson routine or adjustments to activities and the learning environment. We choose these around the child in front of us.

Those observations inform our teaching. We adjust the support while keeping clear, structured reading goals in view.

Learning is active and personal

Our sessions bring reading to life through conversation, movement, stories and hands-on activities. We get to know children’s interests and use them to invite participation, while giving them purposeful practice in the skills they need. We also pay attention to how each child responds to these activities and adapt where needed.

We notice the small steps, too: attempting an unfamiliar word, asking for help or explaining something they have read. These moments help us understand progress alongside reading assessments.

Parents are part of the process

You should leave a conversation with us knowing what your child is working on and how you can help. We share practical guidance for reading at home and provide quarterly feedback on progress and next steps.

For our youngest Launchpad learners, we begin through play and observation in lessons, with no entry assessment. For children joining programmes that require an initial reading assessment, we use it to identify their starting point and plan support.

Our assessments guide reading instruction. We do not diagnose dyslexia, autism or other conditions, and we recommend appropriate professional support where indicated.

Choosing Starbound means choosing structured reading instruction, thoughtful attention to your child and a partnership with you.

We want your child to build the skills to read with greater independence—and the confidence to keep trying as they learn.
